Eye Infections: Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye):

Conjunctivitis or pink eye is an inflammation or infection of the membrane lining the eyelids and white area of the eye (conjunctiva).

Normally conjunctivitis affects both eyes at the same time although it may start in the one eye and spread to the other after a day or two.

Conjunctivitis is a very common eye condition. Although it is not serious it can be very uncomfortable and irritating.

Causes of conjunctivitis

Various types of conjunctivitis are distinguished, easch with its own cause. The three main types of conjunctivitis include:

Bacterial conjunctivitis
This is an infection caused by bacteria which is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Stringy discharge that may cause the lids to stick together, especially after sleeping
  • Swelling of the conjunctiva
  • Redness
  • Tears
  • Irritation and/or gritty feeling
  • Usually affects one eye but may spread easily to the other eye.

In bacterial conjunctivitis, the eyelids may be stuck together particularly in the mornings.

Treatment
Eye preparations that contain agents that either inhibit the growth of or destroy bacteria can be used. Over-the-counter products normally contain sodium sulphecetamide which works to inhibit a broad spectrum of bacteria.

Viral Conjunctivitis
This form of infection is caused by viruses and is identified by the following symptoms:

  • Watery discharge
  • Irritation and discomfort, there may be symptoms of cold and flu
  • Red eye
  • Infection usually begins with one eye but may spread easily to the other eye
  • Sometimes there are tender lymph nodes around the ear or neck
  • This type of conjunctivitis may also spread to affect the cornea (keratitis)
Allergic Conjunctivitis
See info below

Styes

A stye is a small abscess of the oil gland associated with an eyelash hair follicle. It is a bacterial infection caused by a particular type of bacteria called Staphyloccus aureus.

A stye begins as a tender red lump or bump within the eyelid at the base of the eyelash.

Other symptoms of a stye include:

  • Swelling on a small area of the lid
  • A small yellowish spot in the centre of the stye (this is seen when the collection of pus expands to the come visible beneath the skin or eyelid
  • Pain relief when the stye ruptures

Treatment

  • Warm compresses (moisten warm washcloth held gently against the eye for the 15 minutes several times a day)
  • Topical over-the-counter preparations that contain sodium sulphacetamide may also be used. Sodium sulphacetamide inhibits the growth of a broad spectrum of bacteria.
